Surf Area Management Plan for Vanimo and Kavieng

To all surfers visiting Papua New Guinea

Due to the increasing popularity of both Kavieng (New Ireland Province) and Vanimo(Sandaun Province) as Papua New Guinea's premier surfing detinations, the SAPNG in conjunction with its affiliated surf clubs have instituted new surf area manegement plans to ensure a sustainable future for surf-tourism in Papua New Guinea.

Firstly, these management plans prescribe fees to be paid by visiting surfers. There is an initial once only fee that is split between the SAPNG and local affiliated surf clubs and a small daily fee that is retained by the local affiliated surf clubs. Both the SAPNG and local affiliated surf clubs will be using these fees for national and local area surfing development programs including but not limited to member equipment needs, national and international competition participation, club facilities etc.

Secondly and due to the increasing popularity of these two locations for visiting surfers, maximum surfer numbers in any one area at any one time have also been introduced. This measure is in the interest of avoiding overcrowding and its associated problems.

Both of the above issues are normally taken care of as part of the booking procedure when making travel bookings through your travel agent, please feel free to enquire whether they are aware of the fees and quota numbers. If there are any questions please feel free to either contact us directly or get your agent to do so on your behalf.

This SAPNG initiative is in the interest of sustainable surfing development (surf-tourism) for the above areas and to set an example of a well manged tourism resource for the benefit of both local and international visiting surfers in line with the SAPNG goals as outlined within this website
